Constructing a Mickey Mouse Cake

I find it so unbelievable that kids still want Disney character cakes for their birthday. I suppose if Disney characters were only on television, the craze would have died out by now like everything else, but kids must go to Disney and come back infatuated with Minnie and Mickey Mouse.

So, for the first time, I got an order to make a mickey mouse cake and they didn’t want it in buttercream, they wanted me to sculpt his face. I had to look around online for a few ideas before I got started.

I ended up creating a rectangular cake base and then creating a head out of rice krispie treats. Then I covered it in modeling chocolate and molded it with tools. When done, I airbrushed it and then just added a few details by hand by painting on powdered food color mixed with vodka. It came out pretty good for my first sculpted cake.
