When my grandma would come visit us in our home she would always watch the news so that she knew what was happening. However as a result she would always feel paranoid when she was visiting us because she would be super aware of the bad things that were going on. Since I did not watch the news I was not as paranoid as her but soon started to be a little more paranoid because she would tell me about all of the things that she was worried about. Even though I did not watch the news myself I often felt like I did because I found out about all of the different things through my grandma. I always felt like the news carried a certain amount of anxiety that I just did not want to have after those instances. I stopped watching the news but soon I felt like I was out of the loop on many important things that people were discussing around me. Particularly I felt left out on al things political that my friends would talk about. At that point I started to read news online rather than watching anything that was online. For me this was much better because I could choose what kind of things I was going to make part of my knowledge. If I did not want to read depressing things then I did not but would still be aware of all of the political things that I wanted to know about. This made me happy because I was able to have political discussions with my friends about things that I was not able to talk about before. This way I felt like I was creating more of a difference by telling people what I thought about the political trends and by convincing them about arguments I had.

I went to my first sushi class last night not knowing what to expect after a friend told me about cooking mash up she read online. However I quickly learned that this was no traditional class. We did go over the basics, like making the perfect sushi rice – rinse it first, use one to one ratio with rice to water, let it set and remember to season with rice vinegar and sugar. We discussed how to cut fish against the grain for perfect slices and to avoid the pieces being chewy from too much muscle membrane. Last we were shown to place the nori shiny side up, spread a ball of rice gently with wet fingers and roll it up making sure to gently tuck the bare edges, shimmy the bamboo mat, continue to roll and not squeeze too hard. Then we were turned loose to create our own rolls for a sushi mash up competition, where our fellow participants would cast votes and declare a winner.
Here was the twist though, the complete mix of ingredients we were given to make our rolls. Of course there were tables filled with the usual, various fish, cucumbers, avocado, peppers, tobiko, green onion, tempura flakes and all the typical sauces. Some rarely seen items like oranges, pineapple, cream cheese and mushrooms made an appearance. Then came the surprising ones – there were strawberries, bananas, Oreo crumbs, peanut butter, apples, Nutella, coffee beans and even chocolate chips. My imagination went running and I created two unique rolls. One had strawberries, yellow peppers, Oreos, crab stick and cream cheese inside and was topped with spicy mayo and some peanuts. The other had tuna, cucumber, nutella and bananas inside and was topped with spicy mayo and coffee beans. To my delight, I thought they were delicious enough to show up at any sushi restaurant, but sadly I did not win.
